APPLICATION PROCEDURES

1. Please consult with your academic advisor and make sure that the credits offered for the program will fit into your academic program.

2. We also strongly encourage students to visit the Career Services office at their campus to develop their resume. Mason students can make an appointment with University Career Services in SUB I, Room 348.

3. Obtain a cost breakdown from CGE or download it from the CGE website. Take it to the Financial Aid Office at your home university to determine your eligibility. (This only applies to students seeking financial aid.)

4. Submit your application materials to CGE by August 1 for Fall or October 1 for Spring. Your application package must include:

  • Completed online application
  • $125 non-refundable application fee (payable by check made out to Mason, or Visa/Mastercard). Download (59.51K) a Credit Card Authorization Form.
  • Completed Supplemental Form for Internship Programs. You can download the form.
  • Personal Statement: On a separate sheet of paper, please explain your reasons for wanting to participate in this program and some specific questions you want to explore over the course of the semester. Include your future ambitions and goals. Limit your statement to 500 words.
  • Copy of the photo page of your passport (If you do not have a passport and will apply for one, please note this on your application.)
  • Current official academic transcript for non-Mason students. Mason students may submit unofficial transcripts from the Patriot Web.
  • Copy of the front and back of your health insurance card that will cover you abroad. Make a note on the copy confirming that the insurance will cover you abroad. (If you have health insurance that covers you in the U.S., check with your insurance company to see if it will fully cover you while abroad. If not, you will need to purchase another policy.)
  • Four official passport-size photographs.

The following supplementary materials must also be included and will be shared with potential internship sites:

  • Current resume: Include relevant work, volunteer and academic experience. (In addition to submitting a hard copy, please e-mail a copy of your resume to Sarah Mournighan.
  • 3–5 page writing sample: An excerpt from an academic paper or article demonstrating your written communication skills. (In addition to submitting a hard copy, please e-mail a copy of your writing sample to Sarah Mournighan.
  • One letter of recommendation from a supervisor or professor to present to internship organizations.

ON ACCEPTANCE

1. Submit non-refundable $1500 deposit to the Mason Cash Office.

2. For those staying in Mason housing: Submit DIRECTLY to CGE a completed Housing Data Form & Agreement along with a $300 security deposit (payable by check made out to Mason or Visa/Mastercard).

3. Pick up a Financial Aid Profile Sheet and cost breakdown from CGE, submit them to the Mason Financial Aid Office for completion, and return the completed Profile Sheet to CGE. (This step applies only to Mason students using financial aid.)

4. Attend mandatory pre-departure orientation held on the Mason Fairfax campus.

5. Apply for a student visa with the appropriate country consulate in Washington, DC.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Participants canceling out of the program will be refunded the total amount minus the $1,000 deposit up to 30 days before departure. Participants canceling less than 30 days before the program or during the program will not be refunded any portion of the program fee. If Center for Global Education cancels the program for any reason, participants will be refunded the full amount paid. For invoice questions, please contact Joanne Cabe or call (703) 993-4048.


London, England Internship

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Mason students can make an appointment with University Career Services in SUB I, Room 348.

2. Obtain a cost breakdown from CGE or download it from the CGE website. Take it to the Financial Aid Office at your home university to determine your eligibility. (This step applies to students seeking financial aid only.)

3. Submit your application materials before the application deadline. Your application package must include:

  • Completed online application
  • $100 non-refundable application fee for fall and spring or a $75 non-refundable application fee for the summer(payable by check made out to Mason, or Visa/Mastercard). Download (59.51K) a Credit Card Authorization Form.
  • A current official academic transcript.
  • Copy of the front and back of your health insurance card that will cover you abroad. Make a note on the copy confirming that the insurance will cover you abroad. (If you have health insurance that covers you in the U.S., check with your insurance company to see if it will fully cover you while abroad. If not, you will need to purchase another policy.)
  • Four official passport-size photographs.
  • Copy of the photo page of your passport (If you do not have a passport and will apply for one, note this on your application.)

The following must also be submitted and may be shared with prospective internship sites. In addition to submitting hard copies, please e-mail electronic copies to Sarah Mournighan.

  • Personal statement: On a separate sheet of paper, explain: 1) how the London Internship fits in with your academic studies and personal and professional goals, and 2) a description of your preferred internship (include the kind of organization where you want to intern and the strengths/skills that you want to utilize in the internship). Your statement should be approximately 500 words.
  • Current resume: Include relevant work and volunteer experience, academic background and special skills including languages spoken and/or computer skills.
  • Two reference letters from recent professors:
    The letters serve two purposes. We look at them when determining whether to accept students into the program and they may be shared with prospective internship sites in London. It is helpful if the letters highlight special skills or strengths that you would offer to an internship site in your field. The letters should be addressed to "To Whom It May Concern" and either e-mailed, as an attachment, to Sarah Mournighan or sent by campus mail at MS 2B8.

SUMMER INSTITUTE ON
INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

2. Please visit the Career Services office at your campus to develop your resume, cover letter and interview skills. Mason students can make an appointment with University Career Services in SUB I, Room 348.

3. Submit your application materials to CGE by the application deadline. Your application package must include:

  • Completed online application
  • $100 non-refundable application fee (payable by check made out to Mason, or Visa/Mastercard).
  • Personal Statement: In a word document of about 800 words, please explain your reasons for wanting to participate in a International Development program. Discuss your career goals and the kind of Washington DC internship experience you are looking for. Please email this document to Sarah Mournighan.
  • Current resume: Include relevant work, volunteer and academic experience. Please email this document to Sarah Mournighan.
  • 3–5 page writing sample: An excerpt from an academic paper or article demonstrating your written communication skills. Please email this document to Sarah Mournighan.
  • Copy of the photo page of your passport (If you do not have a passport and will apply for one, please note this on your application.)
  • Current official academic transcript.
  • Two official passport-size photographs.
  • One letter of recommendation from your supervisor or professor. This letter can be mailed or emailed directly to CGE by recommender.

2. Your application will be reviewed by the Faculty Director and you will be contacted within 3 weeks of receipt completed application materials to set up an in-person or phone interview. During this interview, the Faculty Director will outline program expectations and help you develop a list of 6 - 10 organizations that you will apply to. All previous students have received an internship placement although it may not have been their first choice. We recommend that you apply as early as possible to as many organizations as possible, as internships in Washington D.C. are very competitive.

ON ACCEPTANCE

2. Mason students using financial aid will need to obtain a Financial Aid Profile Sheet and cost breakdown from CGE, submit them to the Mason Financial Aid Office for completion, and return the completed Profile Sheet to CGE. Non-Mason students will need to arrange financial aid through their own institution.

3. Please note that since we will be traveling to Costa Rica, you will need to check with the Embassy of Costa Rica for your visa requirements. U.S. citizens do not need a tourist visa to visit Costa Rica.

Madrid, Spain or Buenos Aires, Argentina Internship

  • Completed online application
  • $100 non-refundable application fee for fall and spring (payable by check made out to Mason or Visa/Mastercard). Download (59.51K) a Credit Card Authorization Form.
  • A current academic transcript (unofficial is acceptable for Mason students; official transcript required for non-Mason students).
  • Copy of the front and back of your health insurance card that will cover you abroad. Make a note on the copy confirming that the insurance will cover you abroad. (If you have health insurance that covers you in the U.S., check with your insurance company to see if it will fully cover you while abroad. If not, you will need to purchase another policy.)
  • Four official passport-size photographs.
