Program Details

ONLY IN BERLIN are there more than 170 museums and art galleries, 3 opera houses, 8 symphony and 10 chamber orchestras, 880 choirs, 200 theaters, and countless bands, ensembles & clubs!

For this reason, and many others, Berlin is universally admired as an explosively expanding hub of the Western art scene. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to investigate the Arts in German Society for two weeks this summer in Germany's cultural and political capital! As the global hotbed of contemporary visual arts spanning almost 200 years of live museum history, Berlin is also the ONE city in the world where you can experience it all.

Participants in this course will engage in hands-on field research to retrace the complex evolution of the art museum in Berlin from its royal and encyclopedic origins to its most cutting-edge contemporary examples. Students will pursue questions such as:

-- What are the functions of an art museum?
-- How do museums change over time due to new ideas or ideological concepts regarding art and its reception?
--What is the role of museum architecture and display?
--How are museum planning and economics reshaping the city landscape?

The course will include expert guided tours of Berlin's architecture, museums and historical sites, a site program of gallery and studio visits and much more! To document and illustrate research, students will use cameras, recording devices, and other digital media.

Six pre-departure sessions, starting April 4, 2009.
