After becoming Caesar in 355 CE, the Emperor Julian, nephew of Constantine, attempted to limit the official status of Christianity, restore the Olympian gods within the Roman Empire, and rebuild the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. The Mediterranean world could have been much different if Julian had been more successful. This class studies the political and philosophical implications of the different religious possibilities that existed during Julian's time. Our understanding of these differences, and the current importance of Islam, is furthered by the course readings, an examination of classic art, and attention to architecture.
Beginning in Athens, where Julian studied philosophy, we examine the ruins of ancient Greece. We will also read Plato just as Julian did. Our study tour will visit the most important sights in ancient Greece, including Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia, Delphi. We will also take a cruise to the island of Crete and visit the ancient ruins of Knossos (the legendary palace of King Minos). Then we will head to Istanbul, the capital of the Roman Empire, first stopping in Ephesus, one of the best-preserved Roman cities and the location of an early Christian church. We will also spend some days and nights at Parmukkale, Pergamun, Aphrodesia, and Troy.
