This unique Winter Break program concentrates on environmental management, policy, and conflicts at regional and national levels in the Middle East, viewing environmental change as something that produces real social effects, some of which contribute to geopolitical conflict and often escalate to violence.

Sakhnin environmental center as bridge of peace
For the last sixty years, the area along the Jordan River bioregion has provided a classic case study of how easily the environment can be damaged as a result of political conflict, the need for rapid development due to population growth and nationalistic reasons, and simple greed and shortsightedness. During the program, we will examine this region by looking at different case studies that focus on development and conservation efforts, desertification, water crises, and agricultural issues.

statue demonstrating conflict
We will demonstrate and discuss cross-border environmental issues between Israel, Palestine, and Jordan and the cooperative efforts that are being made in order to prevent damage to their shared environment. Throughout the course, we will visit different sites and meet key persons involved in the separate but related environmental and political issues.
