TENTATIVE DATES:
January 3 - 17, 2010 Students will need to make travel arrangements to arrive on January 2. Usually this means departing the U.S. no later than January 1.

COST: $3,890; this cost covers 3 credits tuition, excursions, homestay with a Syrian family, two meals every day, pre-departure orientation, travel guidebook. Airfare is NOT included.

CREDITS: 3 credits based on your proficency: 210, 250, 330, 331 and 380.

TYPE OF HOUSING: Homestays with Syrian families

Damascus University campus

During this intensive language program, Arabic language classes meet for several hours a day, are taught by local faculty at the Damascus University Higher Language Institute, and explore a mix of modern spoken Arabic and the Syrian dialect. Here are the different Arabic language classes (3 credits apiece) that will be offered:

ARAB 102 Beginning Arabic II
ARAB 210 Intermediate Arabic
ARAB 250 Gateway to Adv. Arabic
ARAB 330 Reading and Conversation I
ARAB 331 Reading and Conversation II
ARAB 380 Topics in Arabic Dialect

The most important outcome of this course is that students intensively study Arabic language, granting them access to authentic Arabic culture and tradition. Students will stay with Syrian families in Bab Tomah or Bab Sharqi within the Old City of Damascus. Two weekend excursions trip to Aleppo and Hama in northern Syria and a visit to the ruins of Palmyra in eastern Syria are also included.
